FROM THE HILLS - Kara Marauder | A Short Music Film About Southeast Asia’s Displaced (AI)

Warning: contains disturbing imagery. Viewer discretion is advised.
This film is for the displaced and stateless people of the Mekong region of Southeast Asia — people caught between borders, conflict and shadow economies, trying to find a way forward.
From the Hills is a short music film about displacement and vulnerability across Southeast Asia: conflict, migration, statelessness, trafficking, narcotics and the region’s vast scam-compound industry, where people from Southeast Asia and around the world have been trafficked, coerced and exploited.
The film is grounded in Reactor Corp’s actual fieldwork, alongside documented reporting and research. Our team traveled to the Thailand–Myanmar border, including Mae Sot and the area surrounding Mae La refugee camp, engaging directly with people and organizations connected to displaced communities.
WHY AI IS PART OF THE FILM
Our fieldwork also revealed where the camera cannot safely go. Cameras are prohibited inside Mae La refugee camp, where identifying displaced people can put them at risk. Entering scam compounds with a camera can carry grave personal danger.
We filmed what we could. Beyond those boundaries, the camera could not follow.
That limitation drives our use of AI — not simply as a production technology, but as an artistic medium. From the Hills begins with real people, places, fieldwork, research and reporting, then uses AI to visualize realities that conventional filmmaking cannot safely or ethically reach.
For Reactor Corp, this is one possibility of AI as a new cinematic medium: begin in the real world, then use these tools to take cinema beyond the physical reach of the camera.
LYRICS
I want to get to the city — I'm from the hills,
Write that down — that's the plot, that's the will,
Everything else in the story's just the bill —
What it cost. What it took. What it kills.
Born where the mist eats the mountain by six,
Karen State, red dirt, thatch roof, no bricks,
Daddy grew rice till the soldiers grew bold,
Burned the paddy black — now the whole field's coal.
Mama said run when the jets came low,
Tatmadaw don't knock, they just let the bombs go,
So I walked three nights with my sister on my back,
Moei River at my waist, no papers, no map.
Mae La camp, bamboo rows in the rain,
Twenty years some people waiting in that lane,
Ration card, roll call, a fence and a prayer —
They call it temporary. I was born in there.
Now I'm nineteen with a number, not a name,
Pink card pending, every season the same,
And the city's out there humming like a hive full of bills —
I want to get to the city. I'm from the hills.
I want to get to the city — I'm from the hills,
Crossed the water with my name and my will,
They say the border makes money, say the border kills,
I want to get to the city — I'm from the hills.
Up the Mekong where three flags link,
Golden Triangle — OGs moved the pink
And the brown, now it's yaba by the brick,
Little pills got the whole peninsula sick.
Kings Romans glowing like a chandelier lie,
Croc pit out back, tiger bones inside,
A casino with a crown on a ninety-nine-year lease —
Sia got his own flag, his own police.
And down in Myawaddy where the towers touch fog,
Shwe Kokko ate the village like a stray eats a dog.
Generals get a taste, every broker gets his fill,
And the block never sleeps — but the hills? The hills.
I want to get to the city — I'm from the hills,
Say the border makes money, say the border kills.
Now let me put you on 'bout the towers with the bars,
KK Park — keycards, dogs, and guards,
Kids from Nairobi, Manila, Kathmandu,
Caught a flight for a "job" — now they can't get through
The gate. Passport in the boss man's drawer,
Sixteen-hour shifts, sleep on the floor,
Sliding in DMs with a script and a smile,
"Hey, wrong number" — hold the pig on the line a while.
Get traded 'cross compounds like a re-up, no lie —
Human cargo with a bruise and an eye
On the exit. The scammer got scammed — she a slave to the flow,
Wanted to get to the city — I'm from the hills,
Wanted to get to the city — I'm from the hills.
